The holiday season can be a particularly difficult time for older adults. Changes in routines, loss of loved ones, financial stress, mobility limitations, family separation, health concerns, and memories associated with past holidays can intensify feelings of loneliness and isolation.

This training equips housing staff with practical tools to recognize signs of isolation, initiate supportive conversations, connect residents to resources, and create inclusive opportunities for meaningful connection without assuming that every resident celebrates holidays or wants to participate in group activities.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define loneliness and social isolation and understand how they differ.
  2. Recognize behavioral and environmental signs that a resident may be experiencing increased isolation.
  3. Understand why the holiday season can intensify loneliness among older adults.
  4. Use simple, respectful conversation techniques to check in with residents.
  5. Identify appropriate ways to connect residents with community resources and supportive services.
  6. Develop inclusive holiday-season activities that promote connection, choice, dignity, and belonging.
  7. Establish a practical staff response plan for residents who may need additional support.
